Tribute in Light

Six months ago, more ash coated the roof from which these pictures were taken than snow has fallen in Brooklyn all winter. A choking smell of barbecue and burning plastic filled the air, and a young man sat outside a storefront on Smith Street playing the banjo as fighter jets streaked overhead. No one knew what would happen next, only that they wouldn't like it.
